KDEN adds ‘The King and I’ matinee

Because of the overwhelming response to Kilauea Drama and Entertainment Network’s “The King and I,” a Saturday matinee has been added to the final weekend of performances.

The show, which stars Norman Arancon as The King and Jeanette Gilbert as Anna, plays Friday at 7:30 p.m., Saturday at 2:30 and 7:30 p.m. and Sunday at 2:30 p.m. at KMC’s Kilauea Theater.

Tickets for the Saturday matinee are by reservation. Advance sale tickets for the Friday and Saturday evenings and the Sunday matinee are available at Kilauea General Store, Keaau Natural Foods and The Most Irresistible Shop.

Christmas in July craft fair is Saturday

The 23rd annual Joann Williams Christmas in July Art, Gift, Jewelry and Craft Fair will be held from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday at King Kamehameha’s Kona Beach Hotel in the Kamakahonu Ballroom and parking lot.

The event features vendors from throughout the state with a variety of products including jams, quilts, Hawaiian clothes, lotions, ornaments, artwork, household items and food.

Admission is free and door prizes from each vendor will be given away throughout the day. A silent auction will benefit a nonprofit. The fair is designed to promote island artists and several nonprofits.

APAC production of ‘Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike’ continues

Aloha Performing Art Company’s summer production of Christopher Durang’s new contemporary comedy, “Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike” continues through Aug. 2 with Friday and Saturday performances at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday matinees at 2:30 p.m.

“Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike” won the 2013 Tony Award for best play of the year. The Broadway production featured Sigourney Weaver and David Hyde Pierce. Ohrlando’s Chamber Ensemble offers concerts

Ohrlando’s Chamber Ensemble will offer its first Summer Concert on July 31 in Waimea.

Joel Gimpel, viola and violin, will join the ensemble for the first time. Barbara Coffman, who played the flute in previous concerts will complete the ensemble. Both are members and trustees of the Kamuela Philharmonic Orchestra.

“Ohrlando” will offer the July 31 concert with light Baroque and early classical music, including works by Georg Philipp Telemann, Francois Devienne, Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach, among others.

The July 31 concert begins at 6 p.m. at Kahilu Theatre’s Gallery. The ensemble will also offer performances at 4 p.m. Aug. 1 at Christ Church Episcopal Queen Emma Center in Kealakekua and at 4 p.m. Aug. 2 at a private residence in Kailua-Kona/

Though the concerts are free, a $15 donation is suggested.

Concert benefits Fukushima Kids Hawaii

The fifth Aloha Keiki Ensemble Concert, a benefit for Fukushima Kids Hawaii, is slated Aug. 9 in Kailua-Kona.

On July 21, seven children and three adults are coming from Fukushima to Kona, to stay for one month in Hawaii. In Kona, they are staying at Huehue Ranch for a summer school where they will learn the basic skills of sustainable life, practicing “Farm to Table,” natural healing and BePeace practice. They will also learn how to harvest vegetables and fruits, or shop at local farmers markets. Fukushima Kids Hawaii is a project of Aloha Keiki, a 501(c)(3).

The fundraising concert, featuring Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons performed by violinist Ursula Vietze, is slated from 4 to 6 p.m. Aug. 9 at Hawaiian Queen Coffee Garden in Kailua-Kona. Adults tickets are $20; tickets for children younger than 15 are $15. Attendees also have the opportunity to sponsor a child, maintain the Fukushima house, or sponsor meals. The Rough Riders to play two shows

The Rough Riders — comprising Hawaiian music legends Henry Kapono, John Cruz and Brother Noland — will play two shows on the Big Island during the group’s 2015 “We Ride” tour.

The first show will be held Sept. 12 at the Palace Theatre in Hilo. The second show is slated Sept. 19 at Kahilu Theatre in Waimea.

Legendary musician Roger McGuinn returns to Hawaii

Founder and leader of folk-rock pioneers, The Byrds, Roger McGuinn will play shows in Hilo and Honokaa in August.

McGuinn, famous for his ringing 12-string Rickenbacker guitar sound and Top 10 hit songs “Mr. Tambourine Man,” “Eight Miles High,” and “Turn! Turn! Turn! (To Everything There is a Season)” among many others, will take the stage Aug. 21 at the Palace Theatre in Hilo and on Aug. 22 at the Honokaa People’s Theatre.

The two shows are part of a four-island, six-show tour. It is also McGuinn’s first Hawaii shows since 1978. McGuinn’s solo career began in 1973 and has yielded 10 albums, a Grammy nomination, and extensive touring and performing.

Rowan plans shows in Kona, Hilo

Singer-songwriter, Grammy-Award winner Peter Rowan takes the stage Aug. 28 at Aloha Theatre in Kainaliu.

Rowan, a legendary master practitioner of folk, blues and bluegrass, has released such songs as “Midnight Moonlight,” “No Women No Cry,” “That High Lonesome Sound” and “Panama Red” a mega hit for New Riders of The Purple Sage. His career spans more than five decades from his early years playing under the tutelage of bluegrass legend Bill Monroe, to his time with Jerry Garcia and David Grisman in Old &In the Way. He has also built a devoted, international fan base through a solid stream of records, collaborative projects with Tony Rice, Doc Watson, Mark O’Connor, Sam Bush and Jerry Douglas and constant touring.
